Shriekback - 'Without Real String or Fish' pt.2

I wanted to continue my discussion of Shriekback.  As I mentioned in my earlier post, they are one of my favorite 80's artists and it's such a shame they did not get the recognition, acclaim and airplay they richly deserved.  Their music is so unique and different than anything else.

I shouldn't say they didn't get any recognition and airplay because they did get some.  I remember the TV show 'Miami Vice' had a few episodes that featured music from their 'Big Night Music' album.  Also, the 1985 movie 'Manhunter' featured multiple tracks from the 'Oil & Gold' album.  For those of you not familiar with that movie, it was the prequel story to 'Silence of the Lambs'.  The book by Thomas Harris it was based on was called 'Red Dragon', which after the success of 'Silence of the Lambs' and 'Hannibal', the movie was remade with Ralph Fiennes as the main star and was called by the same name of the book, 'Red Dragon'.

I want to give Shriekback more exposure so here is the video for their 1st single off their new album 'Without Real String or Fish' called 'Now Those Days are Gone'.  It's a great way to start off the new album.

I think one of my favorite songs on this new album is called 'Ammonia Tree'.  The music sounds very similar to the song 'Black Light Trap' from 'Big Night Music', but also has a touch of the mood of 'Oil & Gold'.

The track 'Recessive Jean' at the beginning sounds a lot like the beginning of the song 'Feelers', which is a live track on the album 'The Dancing Years'.  I'm not sure if 'Feelers' was ever released because I only heard it on that album.  This is also a great track.

For those of you who are Shriekback and especially those of you who are not as familiar with them, I strongly suggest buying this album.  It is available purchase on their website www.shriekback.com along with some of their other music.  On the site you can also sign up to receive their newsletter to find out the latest news.

New 'Tour Dates' Page

I added a page called 'Tour Dates' for 80's bands currently touring for the rest of 2015.  Feel free to add any bands and tour dates I may have missed.  I will try to update this page as often as possible.

Shriekback - "Without Real String or Fish"

Shriekback is one of my favorite 80's artists.  Most people probably haven't even heard of them before.  I guarantee that you probably have heard one of their biggest hits "Nemesis".  I included the video below in case you don't recognize the song title.

Shriekback - "Nemesis" from the album Oil & Gold

Devo - Something for Everybody

This is an example of what I call fresh wave.  An artist from the 80's that puts out new music today.  Devo never disbanded after their last album of new music named "Smooth Noodle Maps" that came out in 1990.  They continued to play small venues consistently over the years.  Twenty years later in 2010, Devo released a new album called "Something for Everybody".  This album gave the group new life and got them invited to play in music festivals.  They were invited to play Coachella in April 2011and KROQ Weenie Roast in June 2011.

I may be a little biased because I'm a huge Devo fan, but I think this album is amazing.  It has the sound of a classic Devo album.  Below is the track listing for the album:

  1.  Fresh
  2. What We Do
  3. Please Baby Please
  4. Don't Shoot (I'm A Man)
  5. Mind Games
  6. Human Rocket
  7. Sumthin'
  8. Step Up
  9. Cameo
  10. Later Is Now
  11. No Place Like Home
  12. March On

About Fresh Wave

The reason I started this blog is because I am a HUGE fan of 80's classic alternative music. I also like 90's grunge and current alternative music today as well. However, I feel like these great 80's artists who have influenced the majority of alternative bands in the 90's and today have not been given the respect they deserve.

It seems like in the middle of the 2000's, there was an insurgence of 80's artists reuniting, either with all original members or at least some of the originals, to capture those glory days in the past. Some even went on to put out new music along with playing live shows. Unfortunately, there isn't a place on either FM or Satellite radio to hear these artists' new music. Sure, there are bands that never disbanded, like The Cure and Depeche Mode, which have been able to be successful in playing large venues and selling lots of albums. They even get their new music played on FM and Satellite radio stations shortly after being released, but then get put to the wayside for younger, newer bands.

Some of the new music has been really good and it's a shame these artists are not getting the airplay nor the album sales they should. That's why I put this blog together to pay homage to these amazing bands and get their new music out there. Hopefully, this might help a little to get their music played again on alternative radio stations like it should.

I hope you enjoy this blog and feel free to post any information, experiences, photos, etc. of your favorite artists. Enjoy!
